BCCI to sack Rohit Sharma after West Indies series

After the Indian team loss in the 2023 World Test Championship final, there is uncertainty surrounding Rohit Sharma’s future as their captain. People are asking if he should still lead the team in the next WTC cycle, especially because he might be too old for the 2025 WTC final.

According to a report from the Press Trust of India (PTI), there are doubts about Rohit Sharma continuing as captain after the West Indies series. If the 36-year-old doesn’t perform well in the upcoming series that starts on July 12, the selectors might think about making a change in leadership.

However, a reliable source from BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has rejected the rumors and clarified that there are no valid reasons to replace Rohit as the captain. The source highlighted that Rohit’s performance as a batsman will be assessed after the West Indies series, and only then a decision will be made.

The selectors have plenty of time to think and make a decision since there are no Test matches planned until the team goes on a tour to South Africa in December. It is also mentioned that a new chairman of selectors will join the panel before that happens.

Rohit Sharma has been a successful captain, he has won the most trophies in the history of IPL. Mumbai has won 5 IPL trophies under his captaincy. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma accepted the responsibility of captaincy after persuasion by former Indian president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jai Shah.

It is interesting to note that Rohit was initially unsure about becoming the Test captain when Virat Kohli stepped down in January 2022 due to fitness concerns. He only agreed to take on the role after being persuaded by former president Sourav Ganguly and BCCI secretary Jay Shah. This happened after KL Rahul’s unsuccessful period as captain in South Africa.

Rohit Sharma has been the captain of the Indian Test team in seven matches, with only one of them played outside of India. Under his leadership, the team has won four matches, lost two, and had one draw. Although they were disappointed in the WTC final, Rohit successfully guided the team to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year.
