Rana Daggubati, who acted in SS Rajamouli’s movie Baahubali alongside Prabhas, has revealed something surprising about the film. He mentioned that SS Rajamouli had taken a massive loan amount of Rs 400 crore from a bank to create the two-part series for Bahubali.
Renowned filmmaker SS Rajamouli embarked on a remarkable project with his two-part movie, Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. Undoubtedly, this film has left an enduring impact on the entertainment industry, introducing substantial transformations. Moreover, Rana Daggubati, who portrayed a pivotal role alongside Prabhas, recently unveiled a startling revelation connected to the movie.
It’s widely known that making movies can be very costly. When SS Rajamouli’s movie Baahubali was released in 2015, it became one of the biggest blockbusters of its time. The first part of the film, starring Prabhas and Rana Daggubati, made more than Rs 600 crores at the box office, while the sequel collected over Rs 500 crores. But did you know that SS Rajamouli had taken a massive loan amount of Rs 400 crore from a bank to create the two-part series for Bahubali?
SS Rajamouli Taken Rs 400 Cr Loan For Baahubali
During a recent interview on India Today, “Rana Daggubati discussed the challenges filmmakers face when raising money for their movies. He mentioned that a few years ago, filmmakers would borrow money by pledging their houses or properties to banks, and the interest rates were very high, ranging from 24-28 percent. Rana specifically talked about the movie Baahubali, stating that it was borrowed around Rs 300-400 crore at that high-interest rate for its production.”
Rana went on to share that after the release of Baahubali 1, the filmmakers borrowed more than Rs 180 crore at a 24 percent interest rate for a period of over five and a half years. He mentioned that making the first part of Baahubali was a challenging endeavor as they ended up spending twice the amount of the highest-grossing Telugu film at that time. The borrowed amount of Rs 180 crore, along with the high interest rate, added to the financial pressure. Rana also highlighted that they had already started shooting a portion of Baahubali 2, and if the first film hadn’t been successful, the consequences would have been uncertain.
In May 2023, SS Rajamouli, the director of Baahubali, discussed the financial risks associated with the movie. He expressed concern that if the film turned out to be a failure as some people were speculating, it would have a severe impact on the person who had trusted and supported him throughout the three-year journey. Rajamouli feared that this individual would face significant difficulties in recovering from such a setback.
Baahubali 2: First Indian film surpass Rs 1000 crore
Including to Prabhas and Rana Daggubati, Baahubali featured Anushka Shetty, Tamannaah, Ramya Krishna, Sathyaraj, and Nassar in important roles. The movie shattered numerous box office records, with both parts achieving great success. Notably, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion became the first Indian film to surpass Rs 1,000 crore in box office earnings.
